The Hippopotamus Hunt, oil on canvas by Peter Paul Rubens, c. 1615–16; in the Alte Pinakothek,

 Munich.

This is the first time I have seen this piece of art work before. I was first drawn to it because of the hippopotamus and the crocodile in the middle of it. I was quite confused at first because of this till I started doing some research on this piece. This piece of art is called The Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt created by Peter Pual Rubens. This scene takes place on the Nile River. The two animals were considered a problem back in this time period, so they were hunted down by noblemen. Both men and hounds would take part in taking down these beasts.

I do not think I would own a copy of this artwork but it is very fascinating to look at. I think many cultures could relate with this painting. Many groups of people have a hard time with beavers so they go out hunting for them. This is to prevent flowing water from being. Same with rabbits and groundhogs, many farmers will lose some of their harvest to these animals. This could cause damage in the future for the people that rely on these crops.

I believe that this piece connects with the expansion of scientific knowledge and also the influence of royalty. During this time period with this piece was created, science was getting popular. Ruben has traveled from many places to study his art techniques. These places were Venice, Rome and Florence. The link below gives a better understanding of how Ruben came to be and how his art has developed.

  1. The sense of motion conveyed in this work is really incredible. So much is happening, it's almost as if the whole painting is moving. There is definitely none of the stability we typically see in the Renaissance.
Also, I think it's worth adding that I have never seen hippos as terrifying and dangerous, but that beast will probably be haunting my dreams for the next couple weeks.
