Post Modern Art

Diversity is important in Post Modern Art

Post modern art era is a very unique style compared to all of the other eras. Postmodern art does not follow the modern style approach. It does not follow the traditional ways. The artists that create post modern art want the viewer to acknowledge the traditional meaning of an object that's being created, but they also want to show that it might not actually represent that meaning. They want to show that not everything is related to its traditional meaning. They want the viewers to look at their art with a different perspective. They want the viewers to look at it with a deconstructing notion. Post modern is a style that wants to change the way you think about culture philosophy, and art. Post modern art also uses a vast variety of material that would be unheard of in the different art eras.

Diversity in art is such an important thing to have. It allows for the artist to be fully creative when creating a piece of art. Whether it is from trash, yarn or household items it can be turned into a captivating piece of art. The picture below is a great example of this notion.

These sculptures of vacuum cleaners were created by Jeff Koons in 1980 in an exhibit. Jeff Koon mixes the styles of Pop and Conception to create unique sculptures. These sculptures above are called The New. These sculptures were created to appear like a typical display glass is a store filled with vacuums. It was lit up with fluorescent lights and this was the most outstanding part of this sculpture. It gave the vacuums a twinkle of attraction from afar. He made this sculpture to mock the society at the time because they were so fascinated with these vacuums. He wants to show how these inanimate objects can control or impact our behaviors and thoughts.

When I first saw this, I thought it was a painting. When I started reading up on it, I realized that in fact it was a sculpture. It was interesting to learn how Jeff turned these normal vacuum cleaners into a piece of art. I like how he chose four different vacuums in this piece. These sculptures show a great deal of diversity from traditional sculptures. You do not see too many vacuum cleaners as pieces of art.

This painting above is called Benz Racing Car created by Andy Warhol in 1986. This artwork was in the series Cars and was commissioned by Mercedes Benz. This is a part of the Pop art movement. The piece above is a small visual of the mass production of these cars. The artworks that he created focused on the idea of how everyone is so obsessed with money and celebrities. He painted these cars in four different boxes and each different colors making a unique difference from other styles of art.

This is my personal favorite kind of art. I love the different types of ways one picture can create many different paintings. Andy had a picture of a Benz, painted it in four different panels and then painted them different colors. The diversity here is good. It hold a lot of meaning and also shows a little bit of spunk in his work. The bright colors chosen give it the ability to catch people's attention. I think that is really important to have in a piece of artwork, whether it is a painting, sculpture or any other kind of art.

Marina Abramovic is an artist known for performance art. This art piece was created in 1997 and is called the Balkan Baroque in an exhibit. This form of art depicts the horrors from the war in Bosnia. This installation shows a great deal of diversity. It is not everyday you see art like this. The bones and blood represent a great means. When the bones are bloody, people try to clean them but the blood never truly goes away. This is referring to the shame in war. The shame never goes away no matter how hard you try to wash it from people's memories.

First looking at this piece, I was confused. Taking a closer look at it, I realized it was a pile of bloody bones with Marina sitting on them trying to clean them. I like how she used these to portray what had happened in Bosnia. The meaning is really powerful here. The way she shows how a terrible event can never truly disappear from people's lives. It will always be remembered.

This piece of art is called Away from the flock created by Damien Hirst in 1995. He wanted to give the lamb a new life. He did not want it to be seen as preserved but he wanted it to be seen as dead. He wants to show the tragic beauty of this lamb. The lamb is usually associated as the icon of Jesus. This lamb is in this container to make the viewer feel sorry for it.

I do not really like seeing things like this but it has a greater use of diversity. Using formaldehyde solution to help preserve this animal makes this piece very interesting. I usually do not think of this style as art but I do see how it can be.

This piece above is called Video Oil created in 1979 by Sergio Valle Duarte. This artwork was created to show the pleasures of having video with live movement. Sergio wanted to show the old tv system compared to the new one that came out. The piece had a flat aspect to it at the topic representing the old tv system. The more 3D part towards the bottom represents the newer tv systems.

This honesty is a really cool way to show the difference of how our society can change. It shows how we can improve for the future, poor tv quality to way better quality tv. I like how he showed the two differences in the piece. The light, barely any color on the top to represent the older tv. Then the dark and then bright colors on the bottom to showcase the newer system. The sketching of the buildings, to the hard black silhouette of the lady and then the bright color gives this piece good diversity.

This artwork is called Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into The Met. Museum?. This was created in 1989 by the Guerilla Girls. This is a great example of Postmodern art. This piece of artwork was created during the second wave of feminism. This involves political views and the fight for women's rights in one sign. The women who create this want to fight the art institutions. They want the art institutions to accept women as artists, not just something they can paint. The diversity in this art revolves around politic and art.

This is one of my favorite signs. I love how this graphic is passive aggressive. There is a lot going on in this piece. Fighting for women's rights in the art world was a really hard thing to do. Even to this day in some place, women are still fighting to have a place among the art world. They do not want to be seen as only things to be painted but actually to be the one painting.

  1. Hi Taylor, I loved your blog post, I could tell you chose postmodernism within seconds of seeing the first image to write about. I also want to say I think you did an amazing job tying them all together through diversity. My favorite piece was "Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into The Met Museum", I liked this one the most because it represents feminism and the passive-aggressive message it sends about women's rights. I think it definitely relates to the post-modern era and diversity through the message it sends. At the time it was created during the second wave of feminism and women fighting for equality, that is why I believe it relates to the era and theme you chose.

  2. Hey Taylor,
Your blog post was an interesting thing to read through, though I personally find post-modern style of art to be a bit too strange for me most of the time. It does embody the spirit that anything can be art as it showcases that the intent can be more important than the actual presentation of it all along with how varied it can be, not being tied to existing forms of art.

  3. Freaky! I am shocked, these are awesome! The lamb, and the performance piece, really stick out to me. Physical and metaphorical medium to deliver intent. With the are piece the Balkan Baroque you state “The way she shows how a terrible event can never truly disappear from people's lives. It will always be remembered” and I agree, a traumatic event stays without and affects you throughout a person’s entire life.

  4. Hello,

I also did the theme diversity but I love that we both had the same theme but went two totally different ways with writing our blog posts about it. The art work that appeals me the most is the Benz Racing Car. I feel like since I have a quite big interest for cars, it would be nice to have this one at home since it makes it easier for me to connect with this one compared to the others. I feel like you definitely got it through to us readers that diversity was about the artists being creative and get away from the traditional art.

What I would add to this great blog post is just some of my comments on diversity and art. The main thing that I brought up was diversity is such an important thing for all of us, and art is a great platform to encourage that.

    Great job here!

  5. Your blog post was diverse itself! It was enjoyable to read about each artwork and your interpretation and reaction to each one. I think the post-modern era is super focused on social issues, and I love it! I love to see the changes today and what hasn't changed. I think the vacuum sculpture is my favorite out of all of them. It's very witty, and I think it's. Hilarious but also really fun to look at because of the arrangement and colors used!
