Non Western Art - Maori Art

Image
Māori art  Maori art consists of four forms that are created for symbolic or practical purposes. These four forms of art consist of carving, tattooing, weaving and painting. When the Europeans came, the art culture changed from spiritual to protest to show who the Maoris really are. They wanted to fight for their identities and beliefs. The main colors used to create these pieces of art were mainly red, black, and white. All of these were created from New Zealand.  This painting is called Hinetitama created by Robyn Kahukiwa. This piece was created in 1980. This painting depicts Hinetitama, the first daughter of Tane and Hine-ahu-one. Hinetitama is the Goddess of Death. This painting shows her changing from a human to a Goddess. I picked this painting above because it caught my eye with the bright colors. The line work was also an attention grabber as well. Lines in Maori culture can represent ma

Post Modern Art

Diversity is important in Post Modern Art  Post modern art era is a very unique style compared to all of the other eras. Postmodern art does not follow the modern style approach. It does not follow the traditional ways. The artists that create post modern art want the viewer to acknowledge the traditional meaning of an object that's being created, but they also want to show that it might not actually represent that meaning. They want to show that not everything is related to its traditional meaning. They want the viewers to look at their art with a different perspective. They want the viewers to look at it with a deconstructing notion. Post modern is a style that wants to change the way you think about culture philosophy, and art. Post modern art also uses a vast variety of material that would be unheard of in the different art eras. Diversity in art is such an important thing to have. It allows for the artist to be fully creative when creating a piece of art. Whether it is from

During WWI, art was not the same as it was in the other Eras. Art depicted during WWI was more on the Realism, Surrealism and Expressionism style of art. This focused on nightmarish events that have happened. Art during this time showed all of the propaganda of the war. It showed the harsh realities of warfare such as death. When the war first started, artists jumped right into action. Artists took this as an opportunity to showcase what is going on. They were able to show their experiences of the war through their art. Artists can capture different perspectives of the war that cameras can not.  This painting above is called Gassed, created by John Singer Sargent. This oil painting was created in 1919 in London and it captured a terrible moment during the war. In this painting, it shows the men that have been affected by the mustard gas. These men were in a checkpoint for evacuations, temporarily blinded and terrified. This piece showcases a lot of different perspectives of the

Preferences and Perspective - The Romantic Era

Image
Preferences and Perspective - The Romantic Era The two styles I chose for this assignment and the Romantic Style and the Realist Style. The Romantic movement gave way to Realism. Romantic style art focuses on the spiritual side of a theme. This style is very imaginative and has a lot of fantasy aspects to it. Realist style does not focus on exaggerated emotions and the dark drama of the romantic movement. This art style shows real life people such as laborers and regular people doing work or other activities.  Romantic Style -   Caspar David Friedrich Caspar David Friedrich is known for his allegorical landscapes paintings. He was a part of the Germanic Romantic movement. When he painted, he wanted the contemplation of nature and he wanted his work to convey the spiritual experiences of life. His artwork has a sublime feeling to them. This painting is called Moonrise over the Sea and it was created in 1822. The beautiful colors chosen for this piece shows the contrast of the light and

Jean-Antoine Watteau Watteau was a French rococo artist that created many beautiful pieces of artwork. He is best known for his fetes galantes (romantic scenes). The artwork that I chose from his collection is called the Gersaint’s Shop Sign created in the 1720.  This oil painting was to be his final piece. This painting captures a lot of emotions such as joy and celebration. The people in the painting had discovered some kind of treasure to bring back to their home. More information about this painting in the link below. https://www.aaronartprints.org/watteau-gersaintsshopsign.php I chose this painting by Watteau because of the different things going on in the painting. In one spot there are people looking at a mirror, there is a man poling down a painting of King Louis XIV and a lady speaking to it seems to be a salesman. I like how this moment is captured. It is like you can walk into that scene without skipping a beat. I probably would not own this painting but that does not tak

Peter Paul Ruben The Hippopotamus Hunt , oil on canvas by Peter Paul Rubens, c. 1615–16; in the Alte Pinakothek,  Munich. This is the first time I have seen this piece of art work before. I was first drawn to it because of the hippopotamus and the crocodile in the middle of it. I was quite confused at first because of this till I started doing some research on this piece. This piece of art is called The Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt created by Peter Pual Rubens. This scene takes place on the Nile River. The two animals were considered a problem back in this time period, so they were hunted down by noblemen. Both men and hounds would take part in taking down these beasts.  I do not think I would own a copy of this artwork but it is very fascinating to look at. I think many cultures could relate with this painting. Many groups of people have a hard time with beavers so they go out hunting for th

The painting I chose is from the Northern Renaissance and it was created in 1483. This painting is called, Triptych of Madonna and Child with Angels; Donor and His Patron Saint Peter Martyr; and Saint Jerome and His Lion and it was created with oil paint. This painting has many hidden meanings/ details that would just be too hard to recreate. If you look in one of the angels hands, it holds a pink carnation. This carnation is one of the many symbols of pure love during this time frame.       Every detail that was put in this painting, has many of it a very meaningful peace. It is like you could just walk into that setting and it would look the same in person. I do not think I would own this piece of art but I do recognize the meaning behind it. When I first saw this piece, I was a little overwhelmed. I had to zoom in a couple of times so I did not miss any details. This article below discusses more hidden details that are hidden in the painting. https://ivypanda.com/essays/early-
